Helsinki is the easiest city for many international visitors to try Finnish sauna. Tampere is where I would send someone who decides sauna itself is becoming a reason for the trip.
The Tampere region has an extraordinary concentration of public saunas and is known as the Sauna Capital of the World. It is also home to Rajaportti, Finland's oldest public sauna still in operation.
Rajaportti — start with history
Rajaportti dates to 1906 in Pispala. If you want to understand what an old Finnish public sauna feels like, this is the historical anchor.
Do not go expecting a modern spa. Go because the building and sauna culture have survived.
Local verdict: If you visit only one Tampere sauna for historical context, make it Rajaportti.
Lakeside sauna + swimming
The other reason Tampere works is water. Public saunas connect sauna with lake swimming and, in winter, maintained cold-water access.
Check current opening status for Kaupinoja and any other named sauna before visiting. Rauhaniemi has been closed for renovation during 2026 — never assume it is open without checking the current status.
Why more than one visit?
Different saunas can feel completely different. Room size, stove, stones, ventilation, humidity, water and people all change the löyly.
Tampere lets you compare those differences without travelling across Finland.
Public or private?
Public, at least once. Private is useful for families and groups, but if you travel to a city famous for public sauna culture, hiding in a private room the entire time misses part of the point.
Winter swimming
Do it because you want the contrast, not because the internet says it is required. Use maintained access and follow safety instructions.
How I would build the day
I would not do six saunas. One proper public sauna, a lake swim if desired, food and time to sit is enough. If staying two nights, use the second day for a sauna with a different character.
Helsinki or Tampere?
Helsinki: easier to combine sauna with a first city break and international arrival. Tampere: stronger when public sauna culture itself is a major reason for the trip.
No need to declare a winner.
